As you may know by now we love social media. We have made so many friends over the years. It is quite amazing how you bond over interests, hobbies or style. We met this lovely lady a few months ago.. her name is @fifideer on instagram. You can also find Fi on Twitter.
We asked Fi if she would share some of images of her gorgeous home with our bReathe happiNess readers and she kindly agreed.
Hall (Ideal Home): This photo was taken for Ideal Home by Scottish interiors photographer Douglas Gibb. It belongs to Ideal Home. I wanted to include it though because I love our hall and I couldn't get as good a photo of this angle myself! We found our wee sideboard on ebay, from a German seller. The deer under the cloche is a little of what remains of my 1960s kitsch phase - aged 21, I filled my first home with flamingos, leopard print and was always on the look out for little deer for my collection.
Kitchen: This room was actually a second bedroom when we got the flat, and the kitchen was tucked away in the windowless box room. (we divided the box room up into a utility room and walk-in wardrobe) Moving the kitchen to this room was the best thing we did to the flat - I spend so much time in this sunny room. It is at the front of the flat which looks out onto Leith Links and a great view of the city beyond. I love our table as we found it in a junk shop in Edinburgh and it's totally wonky and the surface is all uneven from years of use/love! I also love my little happy plant table in the window :)
Living room: Our big, comfy sofa! I'm always changing the blankets/cushions and prints on the wall. At the moment we the 'up' print by Fine Little Day, some abstract photography by a friend (it was a house-warming gift from her), a NoBrow screen print, a wee embroidered quote I just made which features a line from a song that means a lot to Mike and I and another NoBrow print with lots of friendly dinosaurs on it.
Living room: This is the view from the big sofa (with the Tv to the right of the fireplace, and shelves full of magazines). I'm so glad we put a wood burning stove in to the flat - it's so cosy in the winter. The big 'Fin' screen print was one of the first prints we bought for the new flat and it makes me very happy indeed!
Bedroom: Another photo of our little calm bedroom. I love our Ikea picture ledge over the bed - currently it features 2 lino cut prints given to me by a good friend before she moved to America - one is called 'home is where the heart is' and the other 'a good pair' because we made a good pair!, a screen print of a hare by another artist friend - I swapped her a vintage globe for it. And a drawing by my lovely Spanish cousin of archie and I (she is a ridiculously glamorous model who currently lives in India).
Bedroom: This is what we see from our bed. A tv for watching our favourite DVDs, a calendar page form the month/year we met, and a wee fox that my Mum made. Our bedroom is a lovely calm and quiet room at the back of our flat, it looks out over the old industrial warehouses/scrap yards and towards the sea.
Who lives here?...
Mike, Archie and I. I'm 29 years old and am currently in the middle of a big build project, turning a 19th century warehouse into a high-end recording studio which is due to open this summer. I will be charting the build on a blog which will be live this month. Mike is my boyfriend and is 27 years old. He is a graphic designer. He is doing all the branding and web design for the studio. Archie is a 5 year old Boston Terrier with a penchant for sticks and scrambled eggs.
What type of house do you live in?...
We live in a 1 bed Victorian tenement flat in the Leith area of Edinbugh. Leith is an area in the east of Edinburgh, by the sea, which until relatively recently was considered really dodgy (most internationally famous for where the novel and film Trainspotting is set). But similar to the east end of London, over the last 10 or so years it has become a really great place to live with loads of creative agencies setting up offices here and young people looking for affordable housing. There are so so many brilliant pubs and restaurants in Leith too and a real mix of cultures and people.
Describe your dream home?
We have actually been discussing this recently as we are thinking of moving next year! We want to stay in Leith as we love it and would really like to get hold of a good project - ideally an old warehouse with a bit of space to make a garden or just a run down period property. We would love to live in a mostly open plan space with huge windows, a big kitchen with a big wooden table and doors out to a wee garden for vegetables. I think we would decorate in a similar style - using lots of white - but I would like to incorporate a more industrial/natural feel into our next property. Basically, a home which looks like an issue of Kinfolk magazine mixed with a warehouse home in Berlin and a little bit of Scandinavian cabin thrown in too!
Where do you find inspiration?
Gosh, where to start with inspiration! Pinterest is THE most wonderful thing ever! I had only just discovered it at the same time as we got our flat (summer 2011) and it was completely invaluable during the whole process of re-designing the space (4 months of builders!) and choosing finishes all well as soft furnishings. I read a lot of blogs - covering design, lifestyle and fashion - these, combined with magazines provide endless amounts of inspiration. But, it is when you pin your favourite images onto Pinterest that you can really see a theme emerging, a pattern of what makes you really happy. This answer is all a little vague isn't it?! Sorry. In sum, I find inspiration everywhere! Then I pin it!
Favourite places to shop...
Ikea, Etsy, second-hand shops/markets, local independent shops - in Edinburgh I particularly love Red Door Gallery, Hannah Zakari and Analogue Books. I love online shopping too and have bought pieces from Fine Little Day, Ferm Living, Bodie and Fou, Finnish Design Shop, Conran Shop, The Calm Gallery, Toast and Heals.
We would like to say a massive thank you to Fi for sharing her home and answering our nosey questions. We both love Fi's style and Shaneen is planning to rip off that feather garland as soon as this post is live... look out for its twin appearing on a headboard in Bucks very soon.
