I opened my new online shop nearly 4 weeks ago and I am loving it!! Last summer we looked at buying a bricks and mortar shop but I am so glad I didn't. Starting any sort of business is a huge financial commitment as well as time consuming but I truly believe if you are honest, passionate and do what you love you will succeed. I have had some comments from family members saying I make it all look so easy, well please do not be under that illusion. This is my 3rd business I have launched and there are always teething problems, tantrums and tears.
My biggest tip to anyone starting a new business is to be organised right from day one. This is my biggest let down, I hate paperwork!!! The word spread sheet makes me break out in a cold sweat. On the plus side it is great being your own boss, working hours that fit around my family. applying all the skills I have learnt over the years. Best of all I get to be really excited about designers and illustrators I discover. I have always loved and supported small businesses through my Social Media, I now get to put my money where my mouth is.
Another tip I would offer you is do not be afraid to ask for help, I have several friends who own and run their own businesses. Asking your friends who have probably experienced what you are going through at some point is the very best resource you can have. (Thanks friends you know who you are)
HELLO PLATES by Lloyd Loves were a happy find of mine and I love stocking these hand painted beauties in my shop, priced at £12.00 each.
