Sharing Sunday lunch yesterday with my sister-in-law means we have a house full of teenage boys who just EAT and kick the ball about, chat and laugh together. I have one niece age 17 in this mix, she is intelligent and beautiful. As I listened to her talking I realised one thing, us girls are never really happy with our bodies.
I wish I could go back in time and tell myself at 17 to enjoy that smooth skin size 10, I wish I could tell myself 'You look great'
I spent so many wasted teenage years not wearing skirts because I thought I had big legs, I now look back at those photos and wonder what an earth I saw through those teenage eyes.
In studies 9 out of 10 teenage girls are unhappy with their body shape and the saddest part of all is that we as mothers pass down our own insecurites onto our daughters.
How can we help the next generation of women fall in love with their own bodies. Us girls go through so many changes and the hormonal roller coaster.. don't get me started!!
I guess it's about showing our kids we love our own bodies first. If our children see us as confident and comfortable in our own skin hopefully they will learn to love themselves too.
I think understanding the positive effects of exercise is really important too, joining a team, dancing, swimming or cycling. Making exercise part of our family lives!!
